Our fathers built this land in poverty

and made it what it is: IJsselmeer and airports

rose from the sea and flagstones from the road,

the youth are bopping forward underground,

mosques drone, bells ring and bring

god from afar yet always in our midst

but in these lowlands rain beats down

on clattering attic windows

and down below the dull improverished fumbling,

the carefully moaning grumble:

harder faster deeper, boyo,

till the bars of the bed all break,

till the bars break and the dikes burst

flooding the polders between their thighs.
